The comparison
Shelf tags compete on the biggest number. Claims are decided by four quieter terms: how long the free window runs, what the credit formula is after it, whose clock the replacement runs on, and what proof the claim stands on. Compared on those, the four chains are four different products.
| Term | AutoZone | Advance | O'Reilly | NAPA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free window | 1–3 yrs by line (published) | Receipt-printed period (45-day general floor) | Per published terms; receipt-anchored | Per-line documents |
| After the window | Proration — published formula | Period ends (per receipt) | Per published terms | Examiner decides; discretion incl. monetary remedy |
| Replacement clock | From ORIGINAL purchase date | Not stated in verified general terms | 90 days or remainder, greater | Per-line; unverified |
| Proof anchor | Phone-tied national database | Original receipt / order invoice | Original receipt + §1.1 database | Receipt + repair paperwork + tag |
| Signature trap | Front-computer record depth | Phone-order account gap | Discharged ≠ dead; 25-mile rule | 30-day-from-discovery clock |
Every cell traces to the chain's published warranty documents (checked Oct 20, 2026); cells that couldn't be verified say so rather than rounding to a plausible answer. This page compares claim terms for a battery you already own — it is not buying advice.
The comparison's real use is tactical: it tells you which argument your chain's document supports. AutoZone fights are record fights and math fights. Advance fights are document fights. O'Reilly fights are routing fights (§2) and database fights (§1.1). NAPA fights are clock fights and paper fights. Picking the argument your chain's own text backs is most of winning.
Not sure which wall you hit? The free checker sorts it in a few picks — chain, part, purchase date, your proof, and the store's own words — and gives you where you stand under the written policy, the proration math where it applies, the exact next counter move, and the ladder above the store. The pages above are the map. The kit is the paperwork: the word-for-word counter scripts, the per-chain playbooks, the worksheets, and the complaint templates.
